Madras HC Friday ordered release of controversial YouTuber Savukku Shankar setting aside his detention under Goondas Act. Shankar was arrested on May 4 for making “derogatory” remarks against women police personnel in an interview. Court said speeches criticising govt, its policies and actions, or exposing corrupt and illegal actions in public administration cannot be termed a threat to public order: “Constitutional institutions cannot indulge in a process to influence people’s views.” It is high time social media content is regulated, court said, “but preventive detention laws cannot be used to curb speeches where there is no disturbance to public order or security of the state.
