Amazon and Microsoft complaints lead to CBI filing FIR against 10 call centres in India – Times of India



The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has filed FIR against 10 call center operators accused of defrauding customers of tech giants Amazon and Microsoft. These operators allegedly duped foreign customers by posing as technical support providers and enticing them with lucrative plan upgrades.
According to a report in news agency PTI, the CBI registered two separate cases last October based on complaints filed by technology giants Amazon and Microsoft.While the initial complaint targeted 10 call centers, five of these were also said to be involved in the case filed by Amazon. This means that five call centers among these duped both Amazon and Microsoft customers.
How these call centres duped customers
The call centers under investigation are alleged to have charged customers for purported technical solutions related to Amazon devices like Fire Stick. In the case of Microsoft, the operators are accused of sending fraudulent pop-up messages claiming computer threats and then exploiting the situation to defraud customers.
Fake tech support scams are one of the most prevalent scams in the US.
The details of these cases have been made public following a court order. There is no other information available about these cases.
