NEW DELHI: Sandip Ghosh, the principal of RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, on Monday stepped down from this position amid a protest in the wake of the brutal rape and murder of a second-year PGT doctor.
The protesting resident and junior doctors on Friday had demanded Sandip Ghosh’s resignation, setting a 12-hour deadline for his ouster.
Ghosh’s resignation comes amid the ongoing strike by junior doctors, interns, and postgraduate trainees, which has disrupted hospital services across the state for the fourth day in a row.
The protesters are demanding a magisterial inquiry into the rape and murder of a woman doctor and have ceased even emergency duties as of Monday morning.
The West Bengal Doctors Forum has also appealed to chief minister Mamata Banerjee for an impartial inquiry committee to investigate the rape and murder of the doctor, demanding increased security for doctors and health workers across the state and capital punishment for the perpetrator.
Meanwhile, Kolkata Police has summoned three junior doctors and one house staff to Lalbazar headquarters. They were on duty on the night of the incident.
The semi-nude body of a second-year post-graduate female trainee doctor was found on August 9 (Friday) at R G Kar Medical College in Kolkata.
Her body was recovered on Friday morning at 7:30 from a seminal hall of the hospital’s emergency building. “Her body was found in the seminar hall at the emergency building by fellow students who informed us,” a senior police officer said.
The victim was on duty when the incident occured on Thursday night. Police formed a Special Investigation Team (SIT) to probe the murder case and arrested a suspect, Sanjay Roy, on Saturday.
