Bangladesh arrests Hasina adviser & ex-law minister – Times of India

DHAKA: Bangladesh police arrested Tuesday evening deposed PM Sheikh Hasina‘s private industry and investment adviser and prominent industrialist Salman Fazlur Rahman and former law minister Anisul Huq. The arrests marked the first major crackdown on high-profile members of Awami League since Hasina’s ouster following student-led protests and the formation of a caretaker govt last Thursday.
Dhaka Metropolitan police commissioner Mainul Hasan confirmed the arrests, saying both Rahman and Huq are charged in connection with the deaths of a student and a street hawker during a clash with police on July 16 in front of Dhaka College.
Rahman, who represented Dhaka-1 constituency in parliament, was arrested along with Huq while reportedly attempting to flee the country by boat from the Sadarghat area of Dhaka. The Dhaka Tribune reported their attempted escape before being held.
The Rahman family’s troubles extended beyond his arrest. His son Ahmed Shayan F Rahman was recently removed from his position as director of IFIC Bank due to an alleged loan default.
Two murder cases have been filed against Hasina and six others, including Rahman and Huq, for the July 16 twin deaths. The ousted PM and former ministers Obaidul Quader, Asaduzzaman Khan, and others were also charged in the death of a grocery store owner, who was killed in a police shooting on July 19 in Dhaka’s Mohammadpur area.
