‘State govt wants to help accused’: Congress’s Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury on Kolkata rape-murder | India News – Times of India

NEW DELHI: Congress leader Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury hit out at the Mamata government just as the political tussle over the Kolkata doctor rape-murder case went up a notch on Tuesday. The former Berhampore MP, while condemning the incident, accused the state government of being in a fix and wanting to help the preparator behind the brutal rape-murder.
“It is condemnable. The state government should take action but it is still in dilemma. The law and order situation is getting worse. The state govt is not capable, and it wants to help the accused,” he told news agency ANI.
Congress MP Renuka Chowdhury also reacted to the incident, saying that such events should not occur and that doctors must be ensured safety.
Meanwhile, the CBI took over the probe into the rape and murder of the postgraduate trainee doctor at the Calcutta HC’s order.
Earlier, the high court observed that the then principal of the medical college, Sandip Ghosh, should have been questioned first in connection with the case. During the hearing, the chief justice questioned the appointment of the former principal.
“How can the principal – who resigned by taking moral responsibility, be appointed as the principal of another government college? The court has asked him to submit a leave application by 3 pm today or the court will pass an order for him to leave the position,” the court observed.
“Why are you protecting him? Record his statement. Let him tell whatever he knows,” the court asked the state counsel.
The post-graduate trainee doctor was found dead in the seminar hall of RG Kar Medical College and Hospital on August 9. An investigation confirmed rape and murder. The deceased’s body showed signs of a struggle, including scratch marks. The family has alleged that the victim was raped and murdered.
