A major chaos broke out at Kolkata’s RG Kar Medical College and Hospital after a group of miscreants broke barricades and manhandled the protesting doctors, damaging hospital property at the emergency building. The vandalism took place as the ‘Reclaim the nights’ protest rallies seeking justice for the brutal rape and murder of a young PGT doctor converged at the hospital from various parts of the city.
Emergency beds occupied by patients under treatment were also vandalised. Doctors, nurses and even cops had to flee the scene as a large mob of outsiders entered the hospital.
The outsiders were wearing shorts and vests and were not part of the initial rallies.
The horrific rape and murder of the on-duty doctor sent shockwaves across the nation. Silent protests, candlelight marches, ‘Reclaim the night’ protests are being held in several parts of the country while the doctors’ associations demanded assurance of minimum security in their workplaces.
Amid a Trinamool versus BJP tussle over the tragedy, the probe into the heinous crime has been handed over to the CBI. Chief minister Mamata Banerjee said the state will extend all support to the CBI as the case needs to be solved at the earliest.
Kolkata Police civic volunteer Sanjay Roy was arrested in connection with the case but doctors, based on autopsy report findings, claimed that more than one person were involved in assaulting and then murdering the doctor.
