‘Our biggest shield’: Rahul Gandhi’s Independence day wishes to countrymen with message on ‘freedom’ | India News – Times of India

NEW DELHI: Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi on Thursday greeted countrymen on the 78th independence day with a message on “freedom”. “For us, freedom is not just a word – it is our biggest protective shield, woven into constitutional and democratic values,” the Congress leader said.
And that freedom meant, the power to express, ability to speak truth and hope to fulfil dreams, he added along with a video message on X.

Earlier in the day, the Rae Bareily MP also was seen sitting with Olympic medallists as Prime Minister Narendra Modi led the nation in marking the 11th straight Independence Day speech from the ramparts of the Red Fort.
Meanwhile, Congress chief Kharge and general secretary Priyanka Gandhi echoed similar messages to the nation.
Mallikarjun Kharge called democracy and the Constitution as their biggest shield against a government that has turned “constitutional and autonomous institutions into puppets”.
“We will protect this till the last breath. The Opposition is oxygen for democracy. It checks the government’s unconstitutional attitude and amplifies the people’s voice,” he said.
“It is important that all of us remain conscious of the freedom given in the Constitution regarding expression, life, food habits, clothing, method of worship and freedom to move anywhere,” he added.
The Congress chief also added that the grand old party’s workers are ready to sacrifice anything in the interest of the nation. “This will be the true tribute to our ancestors,” he said in a video message shared on X.
Congress general secretary Priyanka Gandhi Vadra stressed on freedom, democracy, justice, equality and national unity being central to Congress party’s thinking.
“These values are the foundation of our Constitution. Protecting them is our most important duty towards the nation. Our pledge to protect our freedom, Constitution and its values is firm. Jai Hind. Jai Bharat,” she said in a post on X.
