NEW DELHI: The ministry of external affairs (MEA) on Friday clarified on recent media reports, which have claimed that Prime Minister Narendra Modi is likely to visit Ukraine by the end of August.
Several western nations had raised a red flag after PM Modi‘s visit to Moscow in July.
Ukraine president Volodymyr Zelenskyy had said that PM Modi’s hug with Putin was not just a huge disappointment but also a “devastating blow to peace efforts”.
The speculated visit by PM Modi will mark the the first visit by an Indian prime minister to Ukraine, which will be widely seen as an attempt to strike a balance in the ongoing Russia-Ukraine war.
Commenting on the media reports, MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal on Friday said: “We will be having a press conference shortly and we will let you know more details about it [PM’s trip to Ukraine].”
Media reports citing official sources said the PM is likely to visit Kyiv via Poland.
Apart from China, India remains the only major country to have not condemned Russia explicitly for its aggression against Ukraine.
While India’s position on the war has been seen by many as pro-Russia neutrality, India has maintained since the beginning of the invasion in February 2022 that it wants to be able to reach out to both sides to emphasise the significance of dialogue and diplomacy in resolving the conflict.
