MBBS aspirant ends life after 2 failed NEET attempts | India News – Times of India

THANJAVUR: A 20-year-old student who failed twice in his attempt to clear NEET took his own life in Thanjavur on Friday after his parents insisted that he join engineering without ‘wasting time’ on a third attempt at the all-India test to pursue MBBS. S Dhanush was found hanging from the roof of his room on a saree when his parents were not at home at Silambavelangadu near Pattukottai.
Police said Dhanush, the second son of daily wage labourers Senthilkumar and Shanthi, completed his Class XII in 2022 and wanted to study medicine. However, his parents enrolled him in a private engineering college in Coimbatore, in artificial intelligence (AI) stream. Dhanush, who had no inclination towards engineering, left the college within a month and returned home.
He remained at home and prepared for NEET in 2022 and 2023 but was unsuccessful. This year, Dhanush did not write NEET. Hence his parents reprimanded him and asked him to concentrate on engineering. They applied for his admission to an engineering course once again. Upset by it, Dhanush ended his life on Friday, police said. They recovered his body and registered a case of unnatural death.
Meanwhile, AIADMK general secretary Edappadi K Palaniswami slammed the DMK government for ‘misleading students on the NEET issue’. “What are you doing with the 40 MPs in parliament, M K Stalin?” EPS posted on X. MDMK chief and Rajya Sabha MP Vaiko held the Union govt accountable for Dhanush’s suicide.
Tamil Maanila Congress (TMC) president and Rajya Sabha MP GK Vasan advised students not to resort to the extreme step due to failure in examinations. “Students should seize other opportunities to succeed in life with the support of parents, relatives, and friends instead of taking their lives because of failure in an exam,” he said.
