NEW DELHI: A 34-year-old cyclist was mowed down by a speeding car in southeast Delhi’s Ashram area on Saturday morning. The driver had fled the spot.
Police have managed to identify the car, a Mercedes-Benz, involved in the hit-and-run through CCTV cameras, but the driver had not been arrested as of late Saturday.
Rajesh, the deceased, was a gardener and a resident of Madanpur Khadar.
The incident took place around 8.30 am in the middle of the Ashram Flyover towards Nizamuddin. Police rushed to the spot after being alerted about the incident through a passerby’s PCR call.
Rajesh was found lying in a pool of blood and was taken to a hospital, where he was declared dead on arrival. A passerby travelling on the flyover told TOI, “When I was going on the flyover, I saw a man’s body surrounded by people and an ambulance, and a few metres ahead, a damaged bicycle.”
Police registered an FIR under sections of rash driving and causing death due to negligence of Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita and initiated a search for the driver.
Footage from around 12 CCTV cameras was analysed, and the suspect car was eventually identified. Using the registration number, police sought details of the ownership from the transport authority and started conducting raids to apprehend the driver.
Police said they have found discrepancies in the address obtained by them. They suspect the car was sold a couple of times. A breakthrough in the case is likely by Sunday morning, an officer said.
