AGARTALA: Seven people lost their lives in Tripura due to landslides, two others are reported missing and over 5,600 people have been rendered homeless following continuous rain since Sunday night.
Five deaths were reported from South Tripura, and one each from Gomati and Khowai, secretary Brijesh Pandey said. The dead included three members of a family whose house collapsed due to a massive landslide at Debipur in South Tripura late Monday.One person is missing in Gomati and another in Khowai.
South Tripura’s Bagafa and Belonia recorded abnormal rainfall of 375.8mm and 324.4mm, respectively, followed by 307.1mm in Amarpur of Gomati and 150mm in Agartala in the last 24 hours. IMD has predicted continued rain in the next two days, with a red alert for South Tripura and an orange alert for seven other districts.
All major rivers are flowing above danger marks and low-lying areas surrounding state capital Agartala and other district towns are submerged. CM Manik Saha cut short an ongoing Delhi trip and was expected to return late Tuesday night due to the worsening situation. The state has deployed 200 teams for relief operations.
