‘Aliens are real’: ISRO chief S. Somanath reveals why alien life in the universe could be a reality | – Times of India

In a recent stimulating statement, the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) chairman has stirred conversations about the potential existence of extraterrestrial life. Emphasising the rapid advancements in human technology, the ISRO chief suggests that the existence of alien civilizations is not just possible but likely across the universe. This intriguing perspective invites us to rethink our understanding of life beyond Earth and consider the broader implications of our place in the cosmos.

Technological progress and extraterrestrial life

The ISRO chairman highlighted the dramatic technological leaps humanity has made over the past century.Just a hundred years ago, technological capabilities were relatively primitive compared to today’s standards. This rapid evolution serves as a backdrop for contemplating extraterrestrial civilizations, offering a framework for understanding the potential existence of life forms at varying stages of development throughout the universe.
During a conversation with Ranveer Allahbadia on a podcast, the ISRO chief proposed a thought experiment: imagine civilizations that are either significantly less advanced or much more advanced than humanity. He illustrated this concept by suggesting the possibility of a civilization that is 200 years behind us and another that is 1,000 years ahead. This scenario underscores the vast spectrum of technological and evolutionary stages that alien life could occupy.

Concept of advanced alien civilizations

Building on this idea, the ISRO chief invited listeners to consider humanity’s position in terms of technological evolution over the next millennium. This perspective raises the possibility of encountering highly advanced alien civilizations, potentially far beyond our current understanding or detection capabilities. According to the ISRO chief, civilizations that are 1,000 years more progressive than humanity may already be present in the universe, possibly interacting with it in ways we cannot yet perceive.

Probability of extraterrestrial life

The ISRO chairman’s belief in the existence of extraterrestrial life is rooted in the idea that life forms across the universe could be “much evolved” compared to humanity. He suggests that, from a cosmic perspective, humans are relatively new, and that life and advanced civilizations could be widespread throughout the universe. This viewpoint contributes to the ongoing scientific and philosophical discussions about extraterrestrial life, encouraging a broader consideration of life forms beyond Earth.

Risks of contact with alien life

While expressing his belief in extraterrestrial life, the ISRO chief also shared his concerns about the potential dangers of contact with alien civilizations. He noted that extraterrestrial life might possess entirely different genomic and protein structures compared to life on Earth. This divergence could pose significant risks, as interactions between vastly different life forms might lead to dominance or conflict.
