CHANDIGARH: Former Haryana deputy CM Dushyant Chautala‘s Jannayak Janata Party (JJP) announced Tuesday an alliance with the Chandrashekhar Azad-led Aazad Samaj Party (Kanshi Ram) for the Oct 1 assembly polls.
Under the deal, JJP will contest in 70 of Haryana’s 90 assembly seats and Aazad Samaj Party (ASP) in 20.
The move comes months after Dushyant snapped ties with the BJP and exited as deputy CM, a separation followed by several of his MLAs quitting in recent months.
Dushyant and Azad – also known as Ravan – said the alliance was aimed at driving Haryana forward, emphasising their commitment to fighting for the rights of farmers, labourers and the poor. Both leaders, who are 36 years old, vowed to work for Haryana for the “next 40-50 years”.
Azad described the alliance as a powerful force, one that will bring about a “new revolution”.
In a reversal of his earlier stand, though, Dushyant said his party had never opposed the 2020-21 farmers’ agitation against the now-repealed farm laws. This appeared contrary to the situation during the agitation when JJP stood like a rock behind BJP as a governing ally despite strong pressure to end its backing.
“JJP never opposed the farmers’ movement and was never in support of the farm laws. In fact, JJP workers supported the protesters,” Dushyant claimed. He added that he worked extensively while he was in the govt to improve the lives of farmers while fulfilling most of his party’s election promises.
According to Dushyant, 14 crops were purchased at MSP, and payments made directly to farmers’ bank accounts within two days.
