NEW DELHI: Enforcement Directorate on Tuesday initiated a money laundering probe against Sandip Ghosh, former principal of RG Kar Hospital, and others for alleged bribery and irregularities at the govt hospital since 2021.
Ghosh has already undergone polygraph test in CBI custody in connection with the rape and murder of a doctor in the medical college premises and is facing allegations of bribery in award of contracts.
ED has registered its probe under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act based on FIRs registered by Kolkata police and CBI, which was roped in by Calcutta high court following allegations of mishandling of the case by the city police.
The CBI had earlier carried out searches at multiple locations in Kolkata linked to Ghosh and some contractors who were awarded works at the hospital. The agency has registered two cases, one to probe the rape-murder of the doctor and another under Prevention of Corruption Act to probe financial irregularities in the hospital.
Ghosh and his associates will be probed for all contracts awarded to private entities since 2021, when he took charge as principal. Before allowing the CBI to probe the case of irregularities, the Calcutta HC had admitted a plea by a former deputy superintendent of RG Kar Hospital, Akhtar Ali, who had demanded an ED investigation.
Ali claimed that he had complained to the state authorities last year against Ghosh for irregularities but no action was taken on his complaint.
