NEW DELHI: Indian top-order batter Shubman Gill has begun preparations for the upcoming Duleep Trophy starting on September 5, where he will lead the India A side. Gill shared a video on Instagram showcasing his practice session as he gears up for the significant red-ball assignment.
Shubman Gill is seen playing his signature shots, including drives and sweeps, in the video he posted on Instagram. The footage also shows him taking a recovery bath and relaxing by laying down on the ground. His caption reads, “The most effective way to do it, is to do it.”
Gill gained fame with a daring knock of 91 against Australia at the Gabba in 2021. This performance played a crucial role in India’s historic victory, ending Australia’s 32-year unbeaten streak at their fortress and securing the series. Gill faced challenges maintaining his form in the longer format after his breakthrough series in Australia. During that series, he scored 259 runs in six innings at an average of 51.80, including two fifties.

However, Gill faced a series of poor performances during the tour of England, the ICC World Test Championship final, and the South Africa tour between 2022 and early 2024. His place in the Test side was under scrutiny, and he faced criticism for his inconsistency in Tests.
Despite this, Gill managed to silence his critics with a strong performance in a home series against England. In six Tests and 11 innings this year, Gill scored 498 runs at an average of 49.80, with two centuries and two fifties, his highest score being 110.

The upcoming Duleep Trophy and a demanding 10-match Test season will be crucial in determining the future trajectory of Gill’s Test career.
This season begins with a two-match series against Bangladesh starting on September 19 and culminates in India’s tour of Australia for the Border-Gavaskar Trophy. Strong performances at home and a successful tour of Australia could solidify his position as a key number three batter for India in Tests.
In his Test career so far, Gill has played 25 matches, scoring 1,492 runs at an average of 35.52, including four centuries and six fifties across 46 innings, with a top score of 128.
Gill’s preparations for the Duleep Trophy and his potential impact as captain will be closely watched as he looks to further cement his place in India’s red-ball squad.
