MADURAI: Five members of a family were killed and three others injured when their car rammed into the rear of a parked TNSTC govt bus in the early hours of Sunday near Uchipuli in Ramanathapuram district.
The deceased were identified as Rajesh, 33, of Thangachimadam in Rameswaram, his two children, Darshana Rani, 8, and Pranavika, 4, and two other relatives, Senthil Manoharan, 70, and Angaleswari, 58.Rajesh’s wife, Pandiselvi, 28, had recently given birth to their son around two weeks ago. As the newborn baby fell sick, the couple rented a cab to visit a private hospital in Ramanathapuram on Saturday.
According to police, the family was returning to Rameswaram when the accident occurred. Around midnight, as they were crossing Pirappanvalasai on the highway, the speeding car rammed into the back of the parked TNSTC govt bus that was going from Tirupathur to Rameswaram. The bus had reportedly stopped on the road as one of the passengers felt sick.
The car was crushed in the accident leaving Rajesh, his two daughters and his relatives dead on the spot. Car driver Britto, 35, Rajesh’s wife Pandiselvi and the newborn were rescued with injuries. They were admitted to Ramanathapuram govt medical college hospital. Uchipuli police were investigating.
Three others die in two accidents
Meanwhile, three people, including a man and his daughter, were killed in two separate accidents in Madurai district on Saturday. Thirumangalam Town police said V Thulasinathan and his eight-year-old daughter, Sastika Sri, of Thirumangalam, died after a car rammed their two-wheeler. Thulasinathan had come with his wife Vijayalakshmi and daughter to their newly built house in Dhanakankulam on a two-wheeler on Saturday morning.
After dropping his wife, he and Sastika Sri were standing near their two-wheeler near Kuthiraisarikulam junction on the Dindigul-Virudhunagar four-way when a speeding car driven by T Edwin hit them. Both were rushed to a nearby hospital where they died of severe injuries. Police booked the driver for causing death by negligence.
The same evening, V Suseela, 52, of Duraichamy Nagar Extension, who was riding pillion with her husband M Vaithiyanathan on a two-wheeler, died of head injury after she fell down on being hit by another two-wheeler on the Madurai-Melur four-way. Othakadai police were investigating.
