‘PM’s indifference is unpardonable’: Priyanka Gandhi on fresh violence in Manipur | India News – Times of India

NEW DELHI: Congress on Monday mounted a fresh attack on PM Modi for not visiting strife-addled Manipur, with party chief Mallikarjun Kharge and Priyanka Gandhi Vadra expressing concern over the internal security risks.
Priyanka Gandhi Vadra alleged that the PM “has not made any effort to stop” the violence and the subsequent fallout. In a piercing attack on PM Modi, Priyanka said the country’s internal security “does not depend on anyone’s wish”.
“Manipur has been burning for almost one and a half years. There is daily violence, murders, riots, displacementhouses are burning, families are being destroyed, lives are being ruined, thousands of families are forced to spend their days in relief camps. The Prime Minister has not made any effort to stop this till now,” Priyanka Gandhi Vadra wrote on X.
The Congress leader further said: “It has never happened that a state of the country is left burning like this for months and no one even talks about it. The internal security of the country does not depend on anyone’s wish, it is an essential responsibility. The Prime Minister’s indifference is unpardonable.”

Congress chief Mallikarjun Kharge too spared no words to criticise the ruling BJP, particularly the Manipur CM N Biren Singh and asked the central government to dismiss him for “brazening out his rank incompetence”.
Kharge, attacking PM Modi and Union home minister Amit Shah, said: “In the past 16 months, PM Narendra Modi ji has not spent a single second in Manipur, even as violence continues unabated in the state and people suffer the consequences of Modi-Shah’s complicity.”
He asked the central government to “take full responsibility of the sensitive security situation”.
Kharge said there should be a “massive crackdown on all kinds of insurgent groups, with the help of the state forces”.

Earlier today, a large group of students took to the streets in Manipur’s Imphal protesting against the recent escalation of violence in the state and demanded the removal of the DGP and security adviser.
The students denounced the indiscriminate use of drone bombs and missile strikes by extremist outfits.
The demonstration followed a day after CM Biren Singh along with 18 MLAs, convened a meeting on with governor L Acharya amidst the recent outbreak of violence.
On September 6, Manipur witnessed a fresh escalation in violence, with deadly rocket attacks claiming a life. This incident was part of a series of erratic clashes and security threats that have plagued the region. The violence, however, intensified on September 7, with five fatalities reported in Jiribam district.
Security forces responded to these incidents by destroying three militant bunkers in the Churachandpur district after rocket attacks were launched in Bishnupur.
Since May 3, 2023, ethnic violence between the Meitei community in Imphal Valley and the Kuki-Zo groups in the surrounding hills has resulted in over 200 deaths and left thousands homeless.
