NEW DELHI: An encounter broke out between security forces and terrorists on Wednesday in the upper regions of Basantgarh, situated in Jammu and Kashmir’s Udhampur district, according to authorities.
The exchange of fire occurred when a combined unit of the Army‘s first para and police personnel advanced towards Khandara top, acting on intelligence regarding the presence of a militant group in the area.
The terrorists opened fire at approximately 12.50pm on the approaching search teams.
“A joint team of local police and army launched a cordon and search operation in Khandara Top of Basantgarh. As the joint team of security forces came close to the hiding terrorists, they fired upon the security forces, triggering an encounter,” an official said.
Additional personnel have been dispatched to the region to neutralize the militants, as stated by the officials involved in the operation.
Earlier today, a Border Security Force (BSF) personnel was injured due to unprovoked firing from Pakistani troops targeting Indian posts in the Akhnoor area .
“At about 2.35 am, an incident of unprovoked firing in the Akhnoor area from across the border happened and which was befittingly responded by the BSF. One BSF personnel sustained injuries in Pakistani firing,” a BSF spokesperson said.
He further said the troops are on high alert and keeping a strict vigil all along the International Border and Line of Control.
