KHARAGPUR: A truck driver from Maharashtra was beaten to death after stepping out of his vehicle to help a biker he had hit in Kharagpur, West Bengal, on Wednesday night. The biker also died in the accident.
Shyam Shankar Dhankuar was heading towards Chaurangi when he hit 30-year-old Arjun Nayek around 10.30pm. Instead of fleeing, Dhankuar stopped and got down to help the victim. However, locals surrounded him, vandalised the vehicle, and took him to a local club, where he was assaulted. The biker was taken to Kharagpur sub-divisional hospital, where he was declared dead on arrival.
A large police force from two police stations went to the club to control the mob and rescue the truck driver, and had to resort to lathicharge. Seven cops were injured in the scuffle while trying to save the truck driver, SP Dhritiman Sarkar said.
