September 2024 bank holidays: Are banks closed for Onam? In India, all banks, including cooperative, rural, regional, private, and public-sector banks, are closed on the second and fourth Saturdays of each month, as per the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) guidelines. Additionally, banks remain closed on all Sundays and on national and regional holidays.
September 14, 2024 is the second Saturday of the month, and therefore, banks will be closed.However, even if it were not a second Saturday, banks in the states of Kerala and Jharkhand would still be closed due to Onam and Karma Puja celebrations, respectively, according to an ET report.
The RBI categorizes certain holidays under the Negotiable Instruments Act, Real-Time Gross Settlement (RTGS) holidays, and Banks’ Closing of Accounts.
Onam, a significant annual harvest and cultural festival, is widely celebrated by the people of Kerala. It is considered the official festival of the state and involves various cultural activities. The date of Onam is determined by the Panchangam and falls on the 22nd nakshatra Thiruvonam in the month of Chingam according to the Malayalam calendar, which corresponds to the period between August and September in the Gregorian calendar.

September 2024: Bank Holidays

In September 2024, banks will be closed for 15 days, depending on the state, due to various occasions such as Tirubhav Tithi of Srimanta Sankardeva, Ganesh Chaturthi, First Onam, Milad-un-Nabi or Id-e Milad, Indrajatra/Id-e-Milad, Pang-Lhabsol, Friday following Eid-i-Milad-ul-Nabi, Sree Narayana Guru Samadhi Day, and Birthday of Maharaja Hari Singh Ji.
