MEERUT: Three persons, including a minor, died and three persons were missing after a three-storey building in Meerut’s congested Zakir Colony collapsed on Saturday evening. Rescue teams pulled out five minors, two women, and a man to safety, with search efforts ongoing, despite the challenging weather conditions in the area.
District magistrate Deepak Meena, said, “We got information there were 14 persons in the building and three managed to escape.Of the remaining 11 persons, eight have been rescued and three are still missing. Three persons have died.”
SSP Vipin Tada said all rescued persons were rushed to the district hospital with considerable injuries, and a woman is in critical condition. “A 1.5-year-old girl, Shimra, died in the incident,” he said.
“We received information about the incident around 5pm and rushed forces to the spot. The SDRF and NDRF units also went there and are busy in the rescue operation,” said DK Thakur, additional director general of police, Meerut zone.
According to the district authorities, the collapse was likely caused by the incessant rain over the past three days.
