A missile from Yemen on Sunday entered central Israel and landed in an open area, according to a statement from the Israeli military. The statement confirmed that no injuries were reported and that the missile was identified as a surface-to-surface missile.
The military added that the explosions heard shortly before 7 am (0400 GMT) were from air-defence interceptors, and the outcome of the interception was being assessed.
The Houthi rebels in Yemen, who are backed by Iran, have been conducting attacks against Israel and its perceived interests as a show of solidarity with Palestinians during the ongoing conflict between Israel and Hamas in the Gaza Strip. The rebels are part of the “axis of resistance,” which also includes militant groups aligned with Tehran in Iraq, Syria, and Lebanon.
Since November, the Huthis have been launching regular missile and drone strikes on shipping in the Gulf of Aden and the Red Sea that they believe to be linked to Israel. These waterways are crucial for global trade.
In July, they carried out a drone attack on Tel Aviv that resulted in the death of an Israeli civilian. In response, Israeli warplanes bombed the Huthi-controlled Yemeni port of Hodeida, destroying a significant portion of the facility’s fuel storage capacity and causing several casualties, according to the rebels.
The hostilities with Iran-backed groups around the Middle East have intensified since Hamas’s attack on southern Israel on October 7, which triggered the war in Gaza. The Hezbollah movement in Lebanon, in particular, has been engaged in regular cross-border fire with Israeli forces, threatening to escalate into a full-scale war. The hostilities have forced thousands of people in both countries to flee their homes near the border.
The war in Gaza began after Hamas attacked Israel on October 7, resulting in the deaths of 1,205 people, mostly civilians, according to an AFP tally based on Israeli official figures. Militants also captured 251 captives during the attack, 97 of whom are still held in Gaza, including 33 that the Israeli military says are dead. Israel’s retaliatory military campaign has killed at least 41,182 people in Gaza, according to the Hamas-run territory’s health ministry, which does not provide breakdowns of civilian and militant deaths.
