Multiple migrants lost their lives overnight Saturday to Sunday while trying to cross the English Channel, French authorities reported. The exact number of casualties has not been specified.
The dangerous journey across the Channel, undertaken by many seeking to reach the UK from France, has claimed numerous lives in recent years.
Maritime authorities reported that numerous attempts by migrants to make the dangerous crossing in small boats have been made in recent days, with 200 people being rescued within a 24-hour period spanning Friday and Saturday alone.
Earlier this month, at least 12 migrants died off the northern French coast when their boat, carrying dozens of people, capsized. This was the deadliest such disaster this year, bringing the total number of migrant deaths during crossings to 25, a significant increase from the 12 recorded in 2023.
The French and British governments have been working for years to curb the flow of migrants who pay smugglers substantial sums of money to make the passage from France to England in small boats. According to British officials, more than 22,000 migrants have successfully crossed the Channel and arrived in England since the beginning of this year
