Two simultaneous encounters under way in Poonch & Kathua of Jammu region, operations continue | India News – Times of India



NEW DELHI: After a gunfight broke out between security forces and terrorists in the Mendhar sector of Poonch district on Sunday morning, another encounter started in remote Bani of Kathua district this afternoon, officials said.
According to officials, a gunfight has started between terrorists and security forces at near Nuknali Bani area of Kathua district.
“During a search operation terrorists fired upon the search party of security forces in the Nuknali area Bani, Kathua. On seeing the troops coming closer to the suspected spot, they came under heavy fire which was exchanged effectively,” the officials said.
“Initial reports claimed that two to three terrorists are believed to be trapped in the area.”
“Additional troops have been rushed in to strengthen the cordon in the area,” the officials said, adding, “Further details are awaited.”
Confirming the incident Jammu and Kashmir Police said, “Based on specific intelligence about presence of terrorist, search operation was launched by Police /security forces in general area of Bani (J/D of P/S Bani) Kathua.”
“Contact has been established and few rounds have been fired from both sides. Area cordoned off. “
Earlier a gunfight erupted between security forces and terrorists on today morning in Mendhar belt of Poonch district in Jammu and Kashmir.
Police sources said that on intelligence inputs, a search operation was launched in the general forest area of Mendhar sector and the hiding terrorists believed to be three in number fired upon the search party and the contact was established in Kalaban near Kalaban area, near Pathanateer at Katera village of Poonch district.
“A top terror group commander is said to be trapped among the terrorists trapped,” sources added.
“A joint search operation was immediately launched by the Romeo Force of the Indian Army, the Special Operation Group (SOG) of Poonch Police, and the CRPF.”
Police sources said that the area is cordoned while the exchange of firing is underway,” they added.
Official sources said that there was no firing/ contact since 12pm, however the operation is in progress at the gunfight area and surrounding area to track down the hiding terrorists.
Earlier on September 13, contact was established between security forces and terrorists in the Surankote area of Poonch whereas two soldiers were martyred and as many were injured in a gunfight in the Chatroo area of Kishtwar district on the same day.
Meanwhile, the security has been heightened in Kishtwar, Doda, Rajouri, Poonch, Kathua, and Udhampur districts especially in the upper reaches following the recent terror gun battles between security forces and terrorists and in view of first phase of three phased upcoming assembly polls in J&K.
This is the first assembly election in J&K in 10 years and the first after the abrogation of Article 370 and bifurcation of erstwhile J&K state into two Union territories (UTs).
On September 14, a Junior Commissioned Officer (JCO) was injured during an exchange of fire between terrorists and security forces when an infiltration bid was foiled by alert army troops in Noushera sector of Rajouri district.
On September 13, two soldiers were martyred and as many were injured in a gunfight in the Chatroo area of Kishtwar district while a contact was established between security forces and terrorists in the Surankote area of Poonch.
On Sept 11, two Jaish-e-Mohammad (JeM) terrorists were neutralized, during ‘OP KHANDARA’ conducted by the Rising Star Corps of Army, Police and other belt forces. After a two days long search operation, the Rising Star Corps (9 Corps) recovered a huge war like store and concluded the said operation on Sept 13.
Earlier on September 9, based on inputs from intelligence agencies and JK Police regarding an infiltration bid, an anti-infiltration operation was launched by the Army troops and Police in the general area of Lam, Noushera. Two terrorists were neutralised and a large quantity of warlike stores, including two AK-47s and one pistol, was recovered.
