As India steps up engagement with both Russia and Ukraine, discussing ongoing efforts to end the war, foreign minister S Jaishankar met his Russian counterpart Sergey Lavrov on the margins of the UNGA session. While Jaishankar said they discussed bilateral cooperation and regional issues, Russian foreign ministry said there were talks on urgent international affairs, including “Ukraine settlement“.
PM Narendra Modi had met Ukraine President Volodymyr Zelensky at the UN earlier this week, calling for engagement between all stakeholders. India has maintained that it’s important to involve Russia in any international initiative for enduring peace.
Jaishankar had said India is engaging Russia and Ukraine to see if it can do anything to hasten the end of war.
