NEW DELHI: Security has been stepped up around the Israel embassy in the city after twin blasts were reported outside its embassy in Denmark’s Copenhagen on Wednesday morning. Patrolling has increased and barricading has been ensured to stop unauthorised entry in the area.
The embassy on APJ Abdul Kalam Road in Delhi has already witnessed three incidents in 2012, 2021 and 2023 where the embassy or its staffers were targets. The intelligence agencies have also asked the local law enforcement units to step up vigil around Jewish establishments, community centres/Chabad houses in Delhi and Mumbai.
Officials said the Special Cell was working in close coordination with the intelligence agencies and all inputs were being taken seriously. “We have boosted the presence of uniformed officers at major gatherings and cultural sites to prioritise public safety. We have also advised Jewish religious centres to restrict access to their premises, ensure the functionality of security cameras and alarms, conduct perimeter sweeps, and screen mail and packages,” an intelligence official said.
Police are more cautious because of the previous incidents outside the embassy in 2021 and 2023. On Jan 29, 2021, a low-intensity blast had sent shockwaves through the security apparatus because it took place during the Beating Retreat ceremony on Kartavya Path.
In Dec 2023, an explosion occurred near the embassy, but no casualties or injuries were reported. A letter addressed to the Israeli ambassador was found near the site. The letter, wrapped in an Israeli flag, referred to Israel’s actions in Gaza and mentioned “revenge”.
