Bank of America customers across the United States experienced a major outage on October 3, 2024, with many unable to view correct account balances or access their funds through the bank’s mobile app and website. By late evening, the issue appeared to be subsiding.
The problem, which began around noon Eastern Time, left numerous account holders seeing $0 balances or incorrect amounts in both checking and savings accounts. Some customers reported being unable to use their debit cards or complete scheduled transactions.
What the Bank of America has to say on the outage
“Some clients are experiencing an issue accessing their accounts and balance information today,” Bank of America said in a statement earlier in the day. “These issues are being addressed and have largely been resolved. We apologise for any inconvenience.”
Despite the bank’s initial claim of resolution, complaints continued to stream in on social media platforms and outage reporting sites well into the evening. Down Detector, a website tracking service disruptions, showed a peak of 20,000 reports around 1:20 PM Eastern Time.
However, as of 6:30 PM Pacific Time, Down Detector reported a significant decline in issue reports, with numbers dipping below 700. The decline in reported problems began around 5:15 PM Pacific Time, suggesting the outage was finally winding down.
Some users expressed frustration over the lack of clear communication from Bank of America regarding the cause and expected duration of the problem.
Reports also emerged of some physical Bank of America branches turning away customers or closing early due to the system-wide issues. The bank’s customer service channels, including phone lines and social media support, were inundated with inquiries from concerned account holders.
