In a forthcoming book, former first lady Melania Trump expressed her unwavering support for a woman’s right to an abortion, taking a stance that contrasts with her husband’s position on the issue.
The book, set for release on October 8, just weeks before the US elections, highlights Melania’s belief in women’s autonomy when it comes to making decisions about their own bodies without government intervention.
According to excerpts obtained by The Guardian, Melania asserted, “Why should anyone other than the woman herself have the power to determine what she does with her own body? A woman’s fundamental right to individual liberty grants her the authority to terminate her pregnancy if she wishes.”
She further emphasized that “restricting a woman’s right to choose whether to terminate an unwanted pregnancy is the same as denying her control over her own body” and reveals that this belief has been a part of her “throughout my entire adult life.”
Melania’s position on abortion rights differs significantly from that of her husband, former President Donald Trump, who has taken a more conservative approach to the matter. The book also reveals Melania’s disagreement with some of her husband’s immigration policies during his presidency.
Trump’s appointment of three Supreme Court justices was instrumental in the overturning of Roe v. Wade in 2022, allowing states to implement their own abortion restrictions.
Despite Trump’s recent statement that he would veto a federal abortion ban if reelected, leaving the decision to the states based on their voters’ will, abortion remains a crucial issue in the 2024 election. Polls indicate that Democratic candidate Kamala Harris has a significant advantage over Trump on this topic, even as he tries to downplay its significance by claiming that women will not be “thinking about abortion” if he is reelected.
Throughout her husband’s latest presidential campaign, Melania has kept a low profile. Her office describes the book as “a powerful and inspiring story of a woman who has carved her own path, overcome adversity and defined personal excellence,” providing a rare glimpse into her personal views and experiences.
