A shooting in Beersheba, southern Israel, resulted in the death of one person and injured at least ten others on Sunday, according to police and emergency services.
Magen David Adom, an emergency service provider said, “Paramedics have pronounced a 25-year-old female deceased, and are evacuating 10 casualties.”
Police are treating the shooting as a “suspected terrorist attack.” A police spokesperson said, “A short time ago a report was received at the police headquarters about a suspected shooting incident at the central station in Beer Sheva.A number of injured on the scene.”
“The terrorist was neutralised at the scene and many police forces of the southern district are at the scene,” the spokesperson added. According to an eyewitness who spoke to N12 News, the attacker, reported by media to be a member of the Bedouin community from Israel’s Negev desert region, was shot by military personnel at the location of the incident.
This attack follows a Hamas-claimed shooting in Tel Aviv last week that resulted in the deaths of seven people. That incident was one of the deadliest since the October 7 Hamas attacks on Israel last year.
This incident come just a day before the first anniversary of the October 7 Hamas attack. Israel and Hamas have been in conflict since the October 7 attack, which killed around 1,205 people, mostly civilians, based on an AFP tally from official Israeli figures. Israel’s subsequent military responses have led to at least 41,870 deaths in Gaza, with most of the casualties being civilians, according to figures from Gaza’s health ministry and verified by the United Nations.
