An Israel Defense Forces (IDF) spokesperson has claimed that the wife of former Hamas leader Yahya Sinwar was seen carrying a Hermès Birkin handbag valued at $32,000 in footage showing Sinwar and his family “fleeing into a tunnel” the night before the October 7 attack on Israel.
The footage released by IDF shows Sinwar and his family carrying equipment and supplies as they escaped into a tunnel beneath his home in Khan Younis.
Arabic-language lieutenant colonel Avichay Adraee commented on the disparity in wealth between ordinary Gaza people and the former Hamas leader and his wife, writing on X, “Did Sinwar’s wife enter the tunnel with him on October 6, carrying a Birkin bag estimated to cost about $32,000?! I will leave the comment to you. While the people of Gaza do not have enough money for a tent or basic necessities, we see many examples of Yahya Sinwar and his wife’s special love for money.”
Sinwar’s wife, identified as Samar Muhammad Abu Zamar, married the former Hamas chief in 2011, and they have three children together.
IDF spokesperson rear admiral Daniel Hagari released the video on Saturday, saying, “Even on the eve of the brutal massacre, Sinwar was busy with his survival and the survival of his family.”
Hagari added, “Hours before the massacre, Sinwar only cared about himself and his family while he sent terrorists for the murderous attack on Israeli children, women, and men.”
Sinwar was killed by Israeli forces in Gaza on Wednesday, and Hamas later confirmed his death.
