NEW DELHI: Leader of opposition in Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi on Wednesday lent support to his sister Priyanka, who is entering the electoral race, as he narrated incidents from their childhood at a Wayanad rally.
The Rae Bareily MP assured the people of Wayanad that both he and Priyanka would focus on addressing their issues. Adding a personal note, he said his sister has always been devoted to her family and would now consider the people of Wayanad as her family.
The Congress leader remembered their childhood saying, “What is it that best describes my sister in one-two sentences? When we were small, Priyanka used to dote on her friends and would do anything for them.I would always tell her, ‘Priyanka, you cannot go so far to look after them.’ If she does this for her friends, imagine what she can do for her family.”
“When my father died, it was my sister who looked after my mother. She was 17 when papa died. I am confident that my sister is ready to sacrifice anything for her family,” he added.
Rahul, former Wayanad MP, appealed to the residents to extend the same support to Priyanka that they had shown him during his term from 2019 to 2024.
“I think all of you understand very well the relationship I have with the people of Wayanad,” he said. Speaking of the close bond between him and his sister, Rahul said, “The Rakhi I am wearing was made by my sister. I don’t take it off till it breaks. This is a symbol of a brother’s protection to his sister.”
Following the public event, Priyanka filed her nomination at the collectorate, accompanied by Sonia Gandhi, Rahul Gandhi, Congress chief Mallikarjun Kharge, and AICC general secretary K C Venugopal.
Priyanka is contesting against Sathyan Mokeri from LDF and Navya Haridas from BJP in the Wayanad bypoll, which is scheduled for November 13.
