NEW DELHI: Jammu and Kashmir chief minister Omar Abdullah on Thursday called on Prime Minister Narendra Modi and handed over to him a resolution passed by the assembly seeking early restoration of statehood to the UT.
In his first meeting with the PM after becoming chief minister, Abdullah discussed various issues related to J&K, including the present security situation and development works.
The resolution given to the Prime Minister was passed by the Abdullah cabinet last week. It urges the central govt to restore J&K’s statehood “in its original form”, according to officials. The restoration, according to them, is seen as a crucial step towards initiating a healing process, reinstating constitutional rights and safeguarding the unique identity of the region’s residents.
The CM, who also presented a shawl to Modi, was authorised by the cabinet to engage with the PM and the central govt to advocate for the reinstatement of J&K’s statehood. The resolution was also approved by J&K Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha.
Besides Modi, Abdullah also called on defence minister Rajnath Singh and surface transport minister Nitin Gadkari. During the meeting with Gadkari, Abdullah apprised the minister of issues concerning the execution of road connectivity projects in J&K, the officials said.
