Tesla CEO Elon Musk on Sunday shared a throwback video of him strolling into Twitter headquarters on the second anniversary of his $44 billion purchase of the social media giant X (formerly known as Twitter).
The billionaire shared the footage on X with the caption, “Let that sink in!” The post serves as a reminder of the chaotic acquisition process in 2022, which saw Musk remove key executives, such as CEO Parag Agrawal and legal head Vijaya Gadde, as he took control of the platform.
The video showed him carrying a sink through a lobby area.
The acquisition of Twitter began two years ago when Musk initiated the process of acquiring Twitter by purchasing shares in the company in January.
By April, he had become Twitter’s largest shareholder, holding a 9.1% stake in the social media platform. Musk then made an unsolicited bid to buy Twitter outright for $44 billion, which the board unanimously accepted on April 25, 2022, ABC news reported.
In July, however, Musk expressed his intention to back out of the deal, citing concerns over the prevalence of spambot accounts on the platform. Despite this, he reversed his decision in October and proceeded with the acquisition.
On October 28, 2022, the acquisition was completed, with Musk assuming the roles of owner and CEO of Twitter. Since taking the helm, Musk has put forth various proposals for reforming the platform, such as introducing new features, making the algorithms open-source, and championing free speech. However, his tenure has also been characterized by controversy, including the suspension of high-profile accounts and the termination of half of the company’s employees.
