The latest episode of The Great Indian Kapil Show welcomed special guests Narayan Murthy and Sudha Murthy, along with Zomato founder Deepinder Goyal and his wife, Gia Goyal. In a candid moment, Kapil Sharma asked Sudha if it was true that Narayan had been two hours late when meeting her father for the first time to discuss their marriage. Sudha confirmed the story and went on to share more details.
Kapil asked Sudha Murthy, “I read somewhere that when he (Narayan Murthy) came to meet you for the first time, he was two hours late. Didn’t you think, ‘If I marry this guy, he’ll be so busy that I’ll end up writing books alone, as he’ll never have time for me’?”
She replied, “No, my father asked me, ‘What does Narayan Murthy do?’ Narayan told him, ‘I want to get into politics, join a communist party, and open an orphanage.’ Hearing this, my father thought, ‘He’s saying all this even before marriage. But how much does he actually earn?’ because he saw me as his prized possession.”
She added that her father was also concerned about whether her future husband would be an engineer, as, at that time, engineering wasn’t a common profession. The Rajya Sabha member shared that Narayana Murthy’s attempt to impress her father didn’t go as expected. She recalled that the Infosys founder’s taxi broke down, causing him to arrive two hours late. Sudha Murthy noted that her father was highly punctual and valued timeliness.
Sudha Murthy shared that her father questioned how Narayan could be a good husband if he was already two hours late for his meeting with his future father-in-law. Meanwhile, Narayan Murthy reflected, “I think I was a bit playful back then. I was younger and thought, ‘It’s fine, let him be a little upset.’ I was feeling adventurous.”
