UDAIPUR: A succession ceremony for Nathdwara MLA Vishvaraj Singh, the eldest son of the late Mahendra Singh Mewar, took place on Monday amidst a raging dispute over Udaipur royal family properties in Chittorgarh and Udaipur.
The dispute saw Vishvaraj’s uncle, Arvind Singh Mewar, the younger brother of Mahendra Singh Mewar, place public notices in local newspapers warning against unauthorised entry into the City Palace and the Ekling Temple, where a part of the ceremonies were to be performed.Mewar also blocked entrances to the Udaipur City Palace for specific rituals associated with the succession ceremony.
Protests began over the closure of Samor Bagh gates, and Vishvaraj being denied access to City Palace grounds until after midnight. Supporters of both sides clashed and pelted stones late night, injuring a few people, including policemen. District administration said it would attempt to mediate and faciliate entry for Vishvaraj.
Mahendra Singh Mewar (83), a former MP from Chittorgarh, passed away after a brief illness on Nov 10. His family has a long-standing property dispute with younger brother Arvind Singh Mewar, which continues to be addressed in various courts.
Through public notices Monday, Arvind’s family asserted that Mahendra was disinherited by their father, Bhagwat Singh, the last king of Udaipur. Both Udaipur’s City Palace and Eklingji Temple, he claimed, remain under the control of Arvind Singh Mewar. It was alleged that in 1984, Bhagwat Singh formally severed ties with elder son Mahendra. Since then, Arvind has overseen the family’s properties, which include Udaipur’s City Palace, where he continues to live. Mahendra’s family resides in Samor Bagh near the City Palace.
The initial succession ritual for Vishvaraj was held at Fateh Prakash Mahal in Chittorgarh Fort. Representatives of various former royal families attended the ceremony at Chittorgarh Fort. This ceremony was intended to conclude with prayers at the temple inside Udaipur City Palace.
