NEW DELHI: Tourists visiting the iconic Dal Lake in Srinagar will now have a more convenient way to explore its serene beauty, with the launch of a pre-booked water transport service named Uber Shikara.
This initiative blends modern technology with the rich traditions of the region, allowing visitors to book shikara rides through Uber app.
The service, introduced at Nehru Park, a popular island hub on Dal Lake, is designed to make shikara rides more accessible and affordable. It has started with seven locally-owned shikaras and plans to expand based on tourist demand.
The rides are priced at government-regulated rates, eliminating the need for bargaining, a common concern among visitors. Importantly, shikara operators will receive the entire fare without any commission cuts, ensuring their livelihoods are directly supported.
Wali Mohammed Bhat, President of the Shikarawala Association, told news agency PTI, “This service standardises pricing and provides a reliable booking platform, benefiting both tourists and shikara riders,” he said. Local operators see the potential for increased business as more visitors embrace the convenience of online reservations.
Tourists also praised the service, noting how pre-booking adds ease and reliability to their travel plans.
The rides, accommodating up to four passengers per shikara, are available daily between 10 am and 5 pm, with bookings open from 12 hours to 15 days in advance. This flexibility caters to both impromptu explorers and meticulously planned trips.
The initiative is expected to encourage participation from more of the 4,000 shikara operators on Dal Lake.
