GURGAON: A woman and her son, who were taking a ride in a BluSmart cab, were robbed at gunpoint by its driver, who forced her to transfer Rs 55,000 via UPI before driving away.
Police said the driver was arrested on Sunday. The incident took place on Nov 29 evening. A case was filed at Kherki Daula police station.
The 30-year-old woman and her six-year-old son boarded the cab at Airia Mall in Sector 68 for their flat at a condominium in Sector 86. Near Sector 83, approximately 2km from their destination, the driver halted the vehicle. “He stopped on the roadside and pointed a gun at us, forcing me to transfer Rs 55,000 through UPI after checking the balance,” the woman said in her police complaint.
Based on the statement, an FIR was filed under BNS section 309 (4) and section 25 of the Arms Act against the driver.
Police said after taking the money, he seized her suitcase and ordered them out of the vehicle before driving away.
The police investigation involved verifying cab booking details, money transfer records, and CCTV footage. The accused was identified as Sonu Singh from Kohta village in UP’s Jalaun district.
Sonu was arrested from his house at Badha in the city on Sunday night. He appeared in court on Monday and is currently in police custody.
Manesar DCP Deepak Kumar Jewaria stated, “The accused worked in Gujarat for a long time and he recently moved to Gurgaon. He is being interrogated to recover the robbed amount and the firearm. We are also verifying if he had any criminal record.”
The incident gained attention on social media, with the woman’s acquaintances tagging the cab company. User Samir Ahmed posted, “One of our family friend’s wife and 6-year-old kid was looted at gunpoint in your cab, it was unbearable mental trauma. Driver even threatened to slit the kid’s throat.”
BluSmart responded with a statement, “Following the unfortunate incident, the company immediately assisted the law enforcement authorities with details and search that enabled his arrest within 24 hours. This was possible due to the company’s practice of keeping active records of all driver partners, their background checks, address and other details. The safety and security of our customers is our utmost priority and we are in touch with the family and law enforcement authorities to provide all possible assistance. As a responsible company, we will continue to support the law enforcement authorities in their investigation into the incident.”
