NEW DELHI: Shiromani Akali Dal leader Sukhbir Singh Badal was seen washing utensils at the Golden Temple shortly after his assassination attempt.
This came after SAD leader Balwinder Singh Bhunder informed that Badal would continue performing ‘seva’ after the attack. “This is the place of Wahe Guru, He protects us. ‘Seva’ will continue. We trust the Almighty,” Bhunder said.
On Wednesday, an assailant fired at Badal while he was performing his ‘sewadar’ duties outside the Golden Temple, missing his target as he was overpowered by some bystanders. The attempt was recorded by media persons’ cameras to document the second day of Badal’s atonement for “mistakes” during SAD’s governance in Punjab from 2007 to 2017.
Video footage revealed the assailant approaching Badal, who was seated in a wheelchair due to a leg injury, and pulling out a gun from his pocket. A man standing there swiftly acted, seizing the attacker’s hands. During the struggle, a bullet struck the wall behind Badal, leaving him unharmed.
Authorities identified the assailant as Narain Singh from Dera Baba Nanak. Security personnel immediately apprehended him after the incident.
The Amritsar Police said that Singh has a history of criminal activities, with previous instances of weapons being seized from his possession.
“There are several cases registered against him (Chaura), arms were recovered from him in the past, we will have to check records,” stated Amritsar Police Commissioner Gurpreet Singh Bhullar.
