NEW DELHI: Jasprit Bumrah provided India with a crucial breakthrough on the opening day of the fourth Test of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy at the Melbourne Cricket Ground, dismissing Usman Khawaja during the second session on Thursday.
Australia had dominated the morning session, with debutant Sam Konstas dazzling with a quickfire 60 off 65 balls. His attacking innings propelled the hosts to 112 for 1 at lunch, leaving India searching for answers. After Konstas’ dismissal, Khawaja and Marnus Labuschagne added 65 runs for the second wicket, frustrating the Indian attack and solidifying Australia’s strong start.
Scorecard: India vs Australia, 4th Test
Bumrah struck with the first ball of a new spell, removing Khawaja for 57. The veteran opener, who had hit six boundaries during his composed 121-ball knock, misjudged a pull shot on a length delivery, toe-ending it to KL Rahul at short mid-wicket. The dismissal left Australia at 154 for 2.
This marked the fifth time in six innings that Bumrah has dismissed Khawaja in the ongoing series. Across 87 deliveries bowled to Khawaja, Bumrah has conceded only 24 runs while claiming his wicket five times. The sole exception was the second innings of the first Test in Perth, where Mohammed Siraj claimed Khawaja’s scalp.
