CHENNAI: Traffic was thrown out of gear on Jawaharlal Nehru Salai, 100-feet road, near Koyambedu as the DMDK workers and people gathered to pay homage to actor-turned-politician Vijayakanth’s first death anniversary at Koyambedu.
As the DMDK workers went on a rally, breaching the security, they walked for about a kilometre to Vijayakanth’s marriage hall at the Koyambedu junction. A police team kept barricades opposite the SAF Games village campus on the 100-feet road to block the DMDK workers from proceeding towards the Koyambedu junction.
DMDK General Secretary Premalatha Vijayakanth, her brother LK Sutheesh, son Shanmuga Pandian, and other office-bearers breached the security and went on a rally from the Tamil Nadu Election Commission office towards the Koyambedu junction.
The city traffic police blocked and diverted the vehicles plying from Koyambedu towards Vadapalani, while vehicles from Vadapalani to Thirumangalam moved at a snail’s pace.
Meanwhile, the crowd swelled further on both sides of the road, and many DMDK workers parked their mini-buses, vans, and cars on the roadside, causing traffic to be almost at a standstill for more than an hour.
Traffic cops regulated the traffic, and it resumed later.
