NEW DELHI: After taking a slender first-innings lead of four runs in the fifth and final Test of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy, India began their second innings with a bang, thanks to young opener Yashasvi Jaiswal.
The 23-year-old smashed 16 runs in the first over, setting a new record for the most runs scored by an Indian batter in the opening over of a Test innings.
Jaiswal’s onslaught came against Australia’s veteran pacer Mitchell Starc at the Sydney Cricket Ground on Saturday. Starc started with a dot ball, but Jaiswal wasted no time asserting his dominance.

The second delivery, a short and wide ball, was flayed over the slip cordon for the first boundary. Starc followed up with another short, wide delivery, and Jaiswal slashed it behind square for four more. He made it three in a row with another late cut off a short ball.
After missing his cut shot on the fifth ball, Jaiswal capped the over with a stunning drive through extra cover as Starc overpitched wide of off-stump. The over read 0, 4, 4, 4, 0, 4, giving India a blazing start in their second innings.

Jaiswal and KL Rahul added 42 runs for the opening stand before Scott Boland dismissed Rahul for 13 in the eighth over. Rahul faced 20 balls and hit two boundaries before being clean-bowled.
Unfortunately, Jaiswal failed to build on the start and was also clean-bowled by Boland in the 10th over for 22. He hit four boundaries in his 35-ball knock.
Earlier in the day, India bowled out Australia for 181, narrowly taking the lead after posting 185 in their first innings.
