NEW DELHI: Legendary cricketer Sunil Gavaskar called India skipper Rohit Sharma‘s choice to “step aside” in the last Test of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy (BGT) a “brave decision,” admitting that Rohit appeared “out of his depth” during the series.
Rohit has experienced a rollercoaster seven months, from ending India’s decade-long wait for an ICC trophy in Barbados with a swashbuckling performance to sitting out in the Sydney Test.

“The skipper, Rohit Sharma, was out of his depth and having taken the brave decision to step aside, because of his form, he has also raised big questions about his future in Test cricket,” Gavaskar wrote in his column in The Sydney Morning Herald.
Not merely Rohit’s form was a cause for concern. Virat Kohli also had difficulties. In eight innings, Kohli scored a meager 190 runs at an average of 23.75, while Rohit only scored 31 runs in the series’ three Test matches.

When India head coach Gautam Gambhir lost his cool in Australia

Fans and former cricket players are debating both Rohit and Virat’s futures. Gautam Gambhir, the head coach of India, even addressed the matter, saying that the team would benefit from any decisions made on their future.
“I can’t talk about the future of any player. It’s up to them as well. They still have the hunger, they still have the passion, they are tough people, and hopefully, they can continue to take Indian cricket forward. Whatever they plan, they will plan in the best interest of the team. I have to be fair and equal to everyone in the dressing room,” Gambhir said in the post-match press conference.
