Consumers are asking for mandatory hallmarking of silver jewellery by the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS), minister for public distribution and consumer affairs Pralhad Joshi said Monday.
Speaking at the 78th BIS foundation day, he said the standards making body must deliberate on this call. “Hallmarking of silver jewellery is currently voluntary. But consumers are demanding to make it mandatory,” he said.
Currently, BIS hallmarking is mandatory for sale of gold jewellery in the country. According to official estimates, over 442.8 million articles of gold, jewellery and artefacts have been hallmarked so far. Mandatory gold hallmarking in India started in June 2021.
