7-year-old among 3 die of manja injury, cop critical; kite chase leaves 2 dead | Mumbai News – Times of India


NASHIK/NAGPUR/AKOLA: The banned nylon manja caused three deaths in different parts of the state and left a policeman fighting for life in a hospital on Tuesday, as kites dotted the skies amid Makar Sankranti celebration. Besides, frenzied chase to catch drifting kites left two dead.
Several people suffered manja-related injuries in Pune, Nashik, Nagpur and elsewhere in Maharashtra.
In Nandurbar, a length of suspended manja slit the throat of seven-year-old Kartik Gorve. He died in hospital. Sonu Dhotre (23) was riding a bike in Nashik, when his throat was slit by nylon manja. He was declared dead at the civil hospital.
Sub-inspector Deepak Parde (41) in Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar suffered serious throat injuries after a piece of manja cut deep into his neck. He required 30 stitches and is in the ICU of a private hospital. Doctors described his condition as critical.
In Akola, Kiran Sonwane died after his throat was slit by nylon manja. He was on his bike when the nylon manja got tangled around his neck and severed his windpipe. He collapsed on the spot, and was later pronounced dead.
In Nagpur, Sohail Khan Salim Khan (23) fell from the 5th floor terrace of a building while flying kites. He was declared ‘brought dead’ at a hospital. Ritesh Gandhshriwar (27) from Hudkeshwar in Nagpur collapsed while chasing a kite. He died later.
The 7-year-old from Nandurbar was on a bike, seated in front with his grandfather riding when a piece of manja got wrapped around the boy’s neck and slit his throat.
In Nashik’s Deolali Camp locality, Sonu Dhotre was riding his bike when his throat was slit by nylon manja. Bleeding, Sonu fell off the bike. People took him to the Nashik Civil Hospital, where he was declared dead.
In Pune city, a two-wheeler rider, Devaram Dattatray Kamthe (67), sustained injuries after being struck by nylon manja. In Pune district, two daily-wage earners were injured by manja. One of them sustained injuries to the neck, the other to his hands.
In Mumbai, the police registered 19 offences for use of illegal nylon manja for kite-flying between Jan 10 and 13. Police said the 19 accused were either arrested or served notices. Also, the police said they had seized illegal nylon manja and other material worth Rs 35,350.
