AHMEDABAD: Mohammed Irshad Ansari, a resident of Chartoda kabrastan in Gomtipur, knocked on the Gujarat high court‘s door to save his mother’s grave, which has been demarcated by the civic body for demolition along with variuos shops and residential units for road expansion.
Ansari was among 41 petitioners who filed the petition in the HC. Rest of the petitioners objected to AMC’s bid to demolish the houses and shops as part of the implementation of the town planning scheme by widening the road near Hathikhai in Gomtipur area along the Chartoda graveyard’s wall.

Meanwhile, Ansari urged the court to direct AMC not to demolish his mother Habibunnisa’s grave, which too falls in the earmarked area for demolition. Ansari’s mother died during the Covid pandemic in 2020.
In the petition, Ansari contended that the demarcation line covering his mother’s grave has hurt his sentiments because he has been a frequent visitor to the grave to offer religious prayers for the deceased.
There are 241 structures including two mosques, houses and shops that exist in the Chartoda kabrastan, which has been owned and managed by the Ahmedabad Sunni Muslim Wakf Committee. The occupiers of the shops and houses have been claiming that the land belongs to the Committee and they have been paying the rent to the committee. The petitioners have stated that AMC does not have jurisdiction to evacuate them especially without any eviction notice.
