SHILLONG: A curfew was imposed in Mawkynrew village by the East Khasi Hills district administration on Monday following vandalism at the Ramakrishna Mission School in the area.
Preliminary reports suggested that the under-construction school building was vandalised by a crowd, prompting police to take preventive measures to control the situation.
Reports suggest that protesters against the RKM school construction claim the land, approved by village authorities in 2022. The current village head has claimed back the land which was originally meant for a playground.
East Khasi Hills deputy commissioner RM Kurbah said in her order, “Information has been received about a serious deterioration of law and order in Mawkynrew village under Madanrting PS, with reports of vandalism causing destruction to property at Ramakrishna Mission School.”
“In view of the urgency of the matter, this order has been made ex parte,” the DC added.
