Pakistani fashion designer and actor Deepak Perwani has sparked a heated debate online with his recent remarks comparing life in India and Pakistan. While some Pakistanis criticized him, urging him to “go to India,” others agreed with his observations. The 50-year-old Sindhi Hindu designer, known for his contributions to fashion and entertainment, shared his candid views during an interview on Haute Talk with Aamna Haider.

What Deepak Perwani said

Reflecting on his recent trip to India, Perwani highlighted stark differences between the two nations, particularly in terms of freedom, happiness, and infrastructure. Perwani described a palpable sense of joy and liberty among Indians.
He said: “If you see their lives comparatively, Indians have it better. Happiness abounds. People laugh and live their lives. Women walk freely on the streets, ride bicycles and motorbikes. Even rickshaw pullers and cab drivers use UPI”.

His comments went beyond infrastructure, touching on the quality of urban living. Perwani pointed out how cities in India felt more pedestrian-friendly compared to Pakistan. “It’s far more dynamic. There are pavements and footpaths too. It’s not a concrete jungle,” he remarked, contrasting this with the roads of Karachi, which he described as being less accommodating for pedestrians.

Social media reactions

Perwani’s frank observations have divided public opinion in Pakistan, with some accusing him of being unpatriotic while others view his statements as a sobering reflection of reality. “He needs to move to India and spare us!,” one user commented. Another user wrote “Running away isn’t solution. Go go india u would never get respect u r getting here. instead of making country better they are complaining”.
“Nice to see someone is praising India and the other one is not offended at all and also praising India,” commented a third. “One can feel the tinge of pain in Deepak voice while talking about the difference,” said a fourth. An Instagram echoed Perwani’s perspective, stating that criticism often comes from those who have not experienced the freedoms he described.
