It was on January 26, 1950, when the Indian Constitution officially came into effect thus establishing India as a sovereign, democratic, and secular republic. For the unversed, the Constitution is a framework for governance and the rule of law. Adopting the Constitution replaced the Government of India Act (1935), thus symbolising India’s transition from a British dominion to an independent republic. And so, in honour and remembrance of this historic moment, each year January 26 is celebrated as the Republic Day of India.
However, did you know that while the Indian Constitution was adopted on November 26, 1949, but it came into effect on January 26, 1950? This may make one question why. Well, that’s because January 26 holds a special importance in India’s struggle for independence from the British Rule. It was on January 26, 1930, when the Purna Swaraj movement by the Indian National Congress, led by Jawaharlal Nehru, was demanded, and it laid the foundation for India’s freedom movement. And so, in honour of this day, January 26, 1950, was chosen as the day when the Constitution of India officially came into effect.
