“At the stroke of the midnight hour, when the world sleeps, India will awake to life and freedom”-Jawaharlal Nehru. The year was 1947 and the date was the 15th of August, when India freed itself from the nearly 200 years of British rule in the country. However, due to the absence of a framework to run the country, India still functioned as a British dominion, governed under the British-era Government of India Act of 1935, with formal allegiance still owed to the Crown. Hence, the Indian leaders began the process of creating the Constitution almost immediately.
By August 29, 1947, the Drafting committee, tasked with the preparation of the Constitution of India, was formed. Dr. B.R. Ambedkar was appointed as its chairman, supported by a distinguished team of members. These included K.M. Munshi, Gopala Swami Ayyangar, Muhammed Saadulah, and Alladi Krishnaswamy Iyer. N. Madhava Rao later joined the committee, replacing B.L. Mitter, while T.T. Krishnamachari stepped in for D.P. Khaitan. A formal draft of the Constitution was submitted to the Constituent Assembly on November 4, 1947.
The Constituent Assembly, in its entirety, had 389 members initially, but after partition, the number was reduced to 299. After the submission of the formal draft, these 299 members over the subsequent three years, debated, clashed, and worked together to perfect the book that would define the country.
The Constitution was officially adopted on January 24, 1950, with members of the Constituent Assembly signing two copies of the document, one in Hindi and the other in English. This marked a defining moment for the nation, solidifying its identity as an independent republic.
However, the decision to fully implement the Constitution was deliberately deferred to January 26, 1950, chosen for its historical and symbolic significance. January 26 marked the anniversary of “Purna Swaraj,” the Declaration of Indian Independence proclaimed by the Indian National Congress, rejecting the British-proposed Dominion status. This declaration made exactly twenty years earlier on January 26, 1930, signified India’s resolve to achieve complete independence. Adopting the Constitution on this day represented a monumental shift, transforming India from a British Dominion to a Sovereign Republic. On January 26, 1950, Dr Rajendra Prasad became the ceremonial head of the state and replaced the British monarch.
This year marks the 76th Republic Day and the country is excited as ever. This year, along with the traditional Parade, featuring contingents from the Indian armed forces and the vibrant tableaux from different states and UTs, India will host Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto.
Republic Day holds a special place in the heart of every Indian, as it reminds us of the sacrifices made by countless individuals for our freedom and honors those who laid the foundation for a strong and progressive nation.
