NEW DELHI/LUCKNOW: Prime Minister Narendra Modi and home minister Amit Shah Wednesday expressed condolences over the loss of lives in the stampede at Maha Kumbh.
Before starting his speech at a poll rally in Delhi’s Ghonda area, Modi said: “We lost some good souls in the tragedy at Maha Kumbh, and some people also got injured. I convey my condolences to the families of those who lost their lives and pray for the early recovery of those injured.”
He said he was monitoring the situation after the stampede and was in touch with UP CM Yogi Adityanath.
“Due to Mauni Amavasya, crores of devotees have reached there. For some time, the process of bathing was halted. But for several hours now the pilgrims have been taking bath,” he added.
Earlier, the PM said on X, “The tragedy that occurred at Prayagraj Maha Kumbh is extremely sad.”
In his condolence message to the families who lost their loved ones in the stampede, Shah wrote on X in Hindi: “May God give them the strength to bear this sorrow.”
Yogi said more than 8 crore devotees had arrived in Prayagraj to take bath on Mauni Amavasya, putting pressure on the administration.
